Mykki Blanco releases “The Initiation” track and cover art
Well it does! And coming after “Hell is chilly”… what exactly did you think I was going to say? Mykki Blanco chooses other tongues, Latin in particular, to communicate with us on her latest track “The Initiation,” set to be on her upcoming EP, Betty Rubble: The Initiation.
I’m not going to lie, for the fourth of the track, which was produced by Sinden, that was in English I did get my life. The eery, “black American gothic” sound takes a little getting used to but is certainly worth the listen.
The track is indicative of the rest of the eight-track EP which will eb released on May 21 according to Mykki’s Twitter, with it’s moody vibes. The EP will precede another mixtape and then the artist’s first album.
In the accompanying interview on SSENSE.com, Mykki talks about her start in music, the difference between Mykki and Michael as well as a variety of other topics. My favorite quote was about “on being a gay rapper.” Michael said:
“I never really did distance myself. Le1f, Ian Isiah, Cakes Da Killa, these are all people who are really close friends who are black and gay and involved in this entertainment culture. I thought no, I never want to distance myself from those people… those are my people, that’s my community, it’s important.”
The solidarity is encouraging. Read the rest of the interview.
