I have a FAB interview to share with you all. This morning I had the privilege of speaking with RuPaul’s Drag Race contestant Penny Traiton. She is absolutely FAB and we discussed everything from how she started her drag career to what she learned from being a contestant on Ru Pauls Drag Race. How did you get started doing drag?

I think I started out like a lot of people. At a fundraiser or on Halloween *Laughs*. I started at a fundraiser for HIV service in the early 90’s. The first time I did drag it was a joke and here we are almost 20 years later. I hadn’t really thought about it prior to performing at the fundraiser.. I did the whole gay boy, dressed up in my mom’s clothes thing and that’s about it.

What’s been the peak of your career as a drag performer thus far?

July 1st is will make years. Every time something happens I think it’s the best and it’s not so I can’t really say what the peak of my career has been.

Tell us about your experience with RuPaul’s Drag Race.

The taping of the show was like boot camp for drag. It was hard, it was long, and it was grueling. It has been incredible to be with all of the people on the show.

Interesting. Wht advice can you offer your queens who want to rule the drag circuit?

Keep showing up. This is a business. We’re trying to make money. New queens will have a hard time finding bars who will work with someone who doesn’t already have a following. People like to work with someone who everyone already knows. If you keep going and showing your face eventually you will get work. Be persistent and show that you’re supporting the place that you want to work.

Persistence is key. Where do you see your career headed within the
next year or so?

That’s a tough question. I like to try and live in the experience were having right now. I have no idea. I’m sure lots of great things that I didn’t think would happen will take place.

Name one thing you took away from this experience,

I didn’t take anything away as a performer. However, I made lifelong friends with Detox, and I am entirely too eager to please people who are in a power of authority of me. In the future I wont do that.
